The 2020 Taupo-nui-a-Tia Action Plan (2020 TAP) is available. Click here to view it (1.2MB PDF)

2020 TAP is a non statutory long-term action plan for Lake Taupo-nui-a-Tia. The Plan is supported by central and local government (Ministry for the Environment, Department of Conservation, Department of Internal Affairs, Environment Waikato, Taupo District Council) the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board and the Lakes and Waterways Action Group. The development of the Plan was supported by extensive community input from the 2020 Forum.

2020 TAP focuses on social, cultural, environmental and economic values as identified by the community and tangata whenua, and sets out new actions to be undertaken by the different agencies to help protect or enhance those values identified.

Tia was one of the great rangatira who came to Aotearoa in the great migrations from Hawaikii. During his exploration of this new land he found himself and his followers camped beside a great body of water in a place know as Hamaria. It was while at this camp site that Tia noticed some distance away a rocky cliff face resembled the cloak he wore about his shoulders (this type of cloak was called a taupo). Tia went to the bottom of the cliff where he recited incantations. Tia removed his cloak and fastened it to the cliffs and named them Taupo-nui-a-Tia ‘the great cloak of Tia’. The name Taupo-nui-a-Tia now refers to the Lake itself and the vast surrounding catchment.
