Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Exactly what area does the 2020 Taupo-nui-a-Tia
Action Plan cover?
2020 Taupo-nui-a-Tia Action Plan is looking at the
Lake Taupo catchment area - this includes all of Lake
Taupo as well as the surrounding land and waterways. The Plan
has looked at the threats to the 14 values identified by the
Lake Taupo community in 1998/99 and identified possible solutions.
These values are: Clear Water, Safe Swimming, Weed Free Lake
, Safe Drinking Water, High Quality Inflowing Water, Diverse
Plants and Animals, Good Trout Fishing, Recreational Opportunities,
Foreshore Reserves, Wilderness Areas, Outstanding Scenery,
Geological Features, Commercial Opportunities and Ngati Tuwharetoa
Values.
2. How did 2020 TAP come up with these 14 values?
In 1998/99, in conjunction with over 200 interest groups,
14 values were identified that the community regarded as important
for Lake Taupo and its surrounding area. These values were
first published in the Lake Taupo Accord and have since been
confirmed by other surveys carried out by GNS (Institute of
Geological and Nuclear Sciences Ltd), Environment Waikato
and the VAST project (Vibrant and Sustainable Taupo). The
Environmental Iwi Management Plan adds some specific Iwi/Maori
values; eg. Protection of
waahi tapu sites.
3. If I see someone dumping some
stuff into the Lake who
should I tell?
All illegal dumping into the lake should be notified to Environment
Waikato.
Call the pollution hotline on 0800 800 401.
4. If I see someone doing something on land that
doesn't seem environmentally right, who should I tell?
Contact the Taupo District Council in the first instance
on their hotline, 0800 866 832.
5. Will 2020 TAP make sure the Lake stays clean?
The purpose of 2020 TAP is to protect the health of Lake Taupo
and its surrounding areas for future generations. If current
nutrients, especially nitrogen and other pollutants continue
to flow into the lake, the water clarity and quality will
decrease over time. This project will work with the Taupo
community to find solutions to ensure less risk to the Lake
and a decrease in the decline of Lake water quality.
6. What's the difference between 2020 TAP and the
Environment Waikato Protecting
Lake Taupo project?
Environment Waikato is working on changes to the Waikato Regional
Plan in consultation with local agencies and farmer groups,
to help protect water quality in Lake Taupo . These changes
are part of a strategy to reduce nitrogen to the Lake from
catchment land uses, in partnership with central government,
Taupo District Council and Tuwharetoa. This strategy contributes
to the wider 2020 project; Environment Waikato's strategy
to reduce nitrogen is addressing the community values about
water clarity and water quality.
