Campaign to stop sewage discharges from boats
In April this year, Environment Waikato sent letters to boat
owners who have moorings or marina berths in the Taupo area
reminding them to dispose of their wastewater correctly. It
is illegal to discharge wastewater from a boat to Lake Taupo.
Wastewater contains bacteria, disease-causing pathogens and
nutrients that are harmful to people and the health of the
lake. Wastewater should be collected in secure holding tanks
and discharged safely into pump-out facilities available at
all marinas around Lake Taupo.
For more information, see the media
release prepared by Environment
Waikato.
Lake Taupo Protection Trust members appointed
Six trustees were appointed to the Lake Taupo Protection Trust
in December 2005. The aim of the Trust is to reduce the amount
of nitrogen entering the lake from rural and urban sources
by 20 percent. The Trust will implement a programme using an
$81.5 million joint fund to help landowners reduce the nitrogen
impact of their activities on the lake.

its aim, download Environment Waikato’s media
release. |
