Through the development of the 2020 TAP it became
apparent that what Ngati Tuwharetoa and the surrounding community
value about Taupo-nui-a-Tia is basically the same. The only
differences are the words used to describe what is valued
and the actions required to protect those values. Everyone
wants the Taupo-nui-a-Tia environment to be protected and
enhanced sustainably for future generations.
The Project started by asking the different sectors of the
community to identify values important to the health of Lake
Taupo-nui-a-Tia and the catchment. The following fourteen
key values were identified:
- Clear Water
- Diverse plant and animals in lakes and rivers
- Foreshore reserves
- Geological features
- Good trout fishing
- High quality inflowing water
- Outstanding scenery
- Recreational opportunities
- Safe drinking water
- Safe swimming
- Weed-free lake
- Wilderness areas
- Commercial opportunities
- Ngati Tuwharetoa values
In order to develop the 2020 Taupo-nui-a-Tia Action Plan,
the Project was split into three work strands: iwi, community
and science, with coordinators managing outputs from each
strand. During the first two years of the project, a number
of key publications were written out of each strand. These
publications aimed to find out more about each of the areas
related to the key values. A full list of these publications
can be found in the resources section of the website.
