| Abstract/Description: |
The Lake Taupo Accord definition of ‘weed free’ states, “Lake Taupo is weed free compared to many other New Zealand lakes, there being only limited areas of nuisance weed growth. Low quantities of weed can be attributed to the relatively low nutrient levels in the lake.” The key focus in this review relates to submerged aquatic plants or ‘weeds’ that grow in Lake Taupo. The definition of ‘weeds’ includes not just nuisance growths of macrophytes (large plants), but also macroalgae such as Enteromorpha - a common green filamentous-like alga that can be found around the margins of the lake. This review will consider the role of aquatic plants in the lake ecosystem, factors controlling weed growth and spread, as well as biosecurity issues relating to potential new invasive weed species. |
