| Abstract/Description: |
The Lake Taupo Accord states, “The water of Lake Taupo is clear and clean with visibility extending many metres through the water column.” The key focus of this review is visual clarity of water – how far humans and other animals can see through the water. However, the word “clean” above suggests that aspects other than merely visual clarity should be considered (and may even hint at concern with sanitary quality – refer ‘Safe Swimming’ and ‘Safe Drinking Water). Consideration is given below to the closely linked concepts of light penetration which is important to the growth of plants, including algae, in the lake, and to water colour, which, being of turquoise hue, undoubtedly contributes to the scenic appeal of the lake. This review covers in order of importance: Visual clarity; light penetration; colour (hue). |
