Abstract/Description: The Draft Lake Taupo Accord states: “The high quality of water flowing into Lake Taupo from the Tongariro River, the many streams, and from ground water assist in maintaining the natural circulation and quality of the lake.” This review first summarises the present water quality of the inflows to the lake. It also addresses science related to the sources of the contaminants, and threats posed by different landuses or landuse practices. A range of contaminants will be considered, including nutrients, sediment, pathogens, and pesticides. More emphasis will be given to the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus as these are particularly important to other values such as water clarity. The effect of the inflows on circulation and flushing of the lake will also be discussed. The quality of the inflows refers to the amounts of nutrients, sediments, pathogens (disease causing organisms) and other pesticides in the inflows. The quality of the inflows also relates to the appearance of the water. The inflows include streams and rivers, the Tokaanu tailrace inflow, groundwater entering the lake through the lake bed, and geothermal inflows.
