A 2 Lake Taupo Long-term Open Water Quality Monitoring Programme
Objective: To provide baseline information on whole lake water quality and to detect potential changes in water quality over time.
Rationale: Monitoring of physical, chemical and biological water quality parameters occurs at a deep-water station in the Waitahanui Basin of Lake Taupo. Assessment is made of the rate of oxygen depletion in the bottom waters of the lake as a measure of lake health. Involves monthly monitoring of the surface waters 0 to 10 metres deep and twice yearly intense profiling of the water column 0 to 160 metres in October and April. Commenced 1994.Two additional deep-water sites in the west and south of the lake have been added. Sampling began in January 2002, and is currently intended to run for 24 months.
