A 5 Water Quality of Inflows to Lake Taupo and the Outflow to the Waikato River
Objective: To provide baseline information on the water quality of inflowing streams to Lake Taupo and the outflow to the Waikato River. This monitoring can be used to detect changes in water quality over time.
Rationale: Monthly monitoring of physical, chemical and biological water quality parameters commenced in 1993 at seven inflowing streams to Lake Taupo. Further sites have been added in 2001 and EW now samples 11 sites in nine streams. These nine streams drain 39% of the catchment. In addition, data is also collected on the Tongariro River jointly with NIWA as part of the National River Water Quality Network the Tongariro drains 29% of the catchment. EW also samples the Tokaanu tailrace water, which includes both “foreign” and “native” Taupo catchment water. Commenced 2001.The same methodology for inflow monitoring is applied at the outflow from Lake Taupo one site, Taupo Gates. Commenced 1980.
