(B) 6b Lake and Catchment Modelling (refer also to (B) 30 - TAUPEX)
Objective: To simulate hydrodynamic, nutrient and algal dynamics in the lake from simulated catchment flows and nutrient loads (and various meteorological factors).
Rationale: An overseas computer model of lake dynamics is being calibrated for Lake Taupo. This has been used in conjunction with the existing NIWA/Tuwharetoa/MRP model of catchment nutrient losses (see above) to predict future conditions in the lake following possible land use changes in the catchment. Completed August 2001. The model was further refined by NIWA to improve the “light submodel”, resulting in greater confidence in its ability to predict water clarity changes for a range of nitrogen inputs. The report also includes a sensitivity analysis. Completed June 2003.
