(B) 7 Ruapehu Crater Lake
Objective: Mitigation of the lahar hazard from Ruapehu Crater Lake.
Rationale: AEE completed in 1998 with associated mitigation options. Warning system and bund option chosen after extensive consultation. Warning system now installed, but not fully operational (due mainly to radio links back to emergency personnel). Bund was completed early in 2002 and now provides significant protection to Tongariro River. A “residual risk assessment” was undertaken in 2002 - this showed up to 40% probability of one death. EW has completed a draft of the Northern Lahar Response Plan, and completion is expected by end of 2003. DOC monitoring of lake levels is ongoing.
